On the periphery of the dial on a black track we see a time division of 1/100th of an hour, once used to calculate 1/100th of an hour for time spent working – this is a holdover from the original A386 models. These stainless steel models are either available with a reverse-panda-style dial, with black as its base and silver subdials, or a dial that is almost a spitting image of the original A386 – tricoloured subdials in light grey at 9 o’clock, dark grey at 6 o’clock and blue at 3 o’clock (the rose gold model also has this dial configuration).Ĭuriously, the reverse-panda dial (that has no historical precedence in the A386 line) has beige SuperLuminova, whilst the tri-colour dial features white “C1” SuperLuminova – regardless, both are very attractive options, giving those interested in stainless steel chronographs more options to choose from in this competitive environment. This new model comprises 3 models, two in stainless steel, that would not look out of place in the original 1969 release, as well as a precious metal version that brings a warm and stylish edge. The new Chronomaster Original however, will form a permanent part of the Zenith line-up – one that has been much awaited since the discontinuation of the last 38mm Chronomaster. During the 50th anniversary celebrations of the El Primero, we saw many limited edition collaborations on this model, including models done with Phillips Watches, as well as the Revival series that saw a trilogy of precious models with ultra-extended (50 year) warranties. The A386 forms the basis of the new Chronomaster Original, reviving the original proportions and dial design of this foundational model. This is something that was achieved with the release of the Zenith Chronomaster Original, a watch that would not look out of place in 1969, but also would not be possible without the knowledge we have accumulated as of 2021. The much anticipated re-release of the lauded Zenith 38mm El Primero Chronograph had to be something that paid tribute to what defined Zenith in the 20th Century, whilst bringing innovation to an icon. Powered by the El Primero 3600 high-frequency automatic caliber, equipped with a chronograph function with a reading accuracy of 1 / 10th of a second and a 60-hour power reserve.Zenith’s roll-out of their greatest hits in 2021 have provided much for those that love a vintage aesthetic. The Chronomaster Original features a 38 mm steel case of the same proportions as the A386, with a black “reverse panda” dial and light brown leather strap. On May 28, 1971, the company was sold to Zenith Radio Corporation, first a radio and then television manufacturer based in Chicago. However, El Primero's success was short-lived. The 'El Primero' caliber had an impressive frequency of 36.000 VPH while maintaining a power reserve of 50 hours. With an overall modern and colorful look, the model's launch marked a move away from the more understated aesthetic of the 40s and 50s The dial was in keeping with the aesthetic freedom of the 60s-70s with its superimposed blue, gray and anthracite dial and red chronograph hand bringing a pop of vivid color. The case was 37,5mm in diameter with long angled lugs and the long tachymeter scale in flange. Reference A386 was introduced in 1969 and housed this revolutionary new caliber. On January 10, 1969, in a press conference held in Le Locle, Zenith announced the birth of the caliber 3019, called El Primero as it was the first manufacturer to publicly launch its automatic chronograph according to the brand. The new Chronomaster Original brings with it a great technical revolution with the new caliber 3600, but leaves intact the A386 line of 1969 that has made so many fans fall in love for over 50 years.
